Scripture Memory Challenge!

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  2 Timothy 3:16-17

A while back, I was living in SF and joined this small group where the leader had everyone memorize 5 Bible verses every week. It was just a temporary stay, so I only stuck with it for 2 weeks, but even in that short time, I could tell that everyone in the group was struggling with it.

I feel like memorizing Scripture is something that people just naturally would agree is a good thing to do, but you might not always stop to ask why it matters.

It’s true, you’ll probably never be approached in a dark alley by a guy with knife who says "Hey, recite Romans 12... or else..."

On the other hand, if we are to believe that "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work", then filling our minds with Scripture must be how the Holy Spirit molds us into Christlikeness. We may not need to recite verses for the safety of our lives, but God's Word living within us will protect our hearts from sin.

So here’s a quick challenge: below are 6 passages with a few words blacked out. How many can you fill in from memory? Post your score out of 6 in the comments!

1- John 15:4

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

2- 1 Corinthians 10:13-14

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

3- Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

4- Proverbs 3:9-10

Honor the Lord with your wealth
    and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will be bursting with wine.

5- Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

6- 1 Timothy 4:12

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
